Book Report: The Vegan Starter Kit + GIVEAWAY

A few weeks ago, I had the enormous pleasure of having dinner with one of my plant-based heroes, Dr. Neil Barnard. I can’t really put into words how wonderful it was to sit and talk with such an accomplished man, a pioneer in his field, and a big influence on my life and work. And today I am honored to feature Dr. Barnard’s new book, The Vegan Starter Kit.

First, let me tell you about Dr. Barnard. He is leading a revolution in medicine by putting a new focus on health and compassion. He runs the Physician’s Committee for Responsible for Medicine, an organization that is dedicated to saving and improving human and animal lives through plant-based diets and ethical and effective scientific research.

The PCRM website is a terrific resource, offering all kinds of information on health, disease, nutrition, as well as plant-based recipes and resources. PCRM also recruits people for health studies and offers information on the state of animal testing and ethical science.

In addition to all of that, Dr. Barnard started the Barnard Medical Center, where he connects medical care with the latest advances in prevention and nutrition to create individual health care plans. Patients with diabetes, excess weight, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other metabolic conditions—as well as those with day-to-day health problems—have the opportunity to revolutionize their health, with plenty of support. They provide more than top-of-the-line medical care by tackling the root causes of illness, with extra attention on improving health through prevention and nutrition.

With all of that going on, Dr. Barnard is also an accomplished author. He’s written over 10 books including one of my favorites, The Cheese Trap, which I love to gift to people who say that they can’t give up cheese. And now I have a new book to give out this holiday season. It’s The Vegan Starter Kit and I am giving copies away to THREE lucky readers!

In this book, Dr. Barnard shows how to put the power of a vegan diet to work with an easy, step-by-step approach. He presents everything you need to know to achieve dramatically better health and a set of easy-to-prepare recipes as well as tips for restaurants and travel. This book answers all the typical vegan questions: How do I plan a vegan meal? Is protein an issue? How do I make it work if I don’t cook? What are the best choices at restaurants?

I love the quick reference charts the most because they list all of the important foods we need. And, this is the best piece of information I learned. Broccoli is quite possibly Mother Nature’s most perfect food. It’s on every chart, hitting every target: fiber, protein, calcium, and Omega-3s. Good thing we eat broccoli multiple times a week in my house!

This little book is a big powerhouse of information and if you want your own copy, email me at lisasprojectvegan at gmail dot com and tell me why you think you need it or who you would like to give it to.

The giveaway is open to US mailing addresses only and will be open until Friday, December 7th at noon.
