Homemade Deoderant

I am so proud of myself for this one! I knew it was time to DIY outside of the kitchen and I decided to start with deodorant. This summer whatever I was buying, albeit the most natural deodorant on the market, wasn’t working. So I stopped wearing it all together. But then after a few weeks, I decided that I needed…something. I searched the internets for a recipe and this is the version that works best for me.

The base for the deodorant is coconut oil which melts in warm temps so after some experimenting, I decided it was best to get empty containers, make sticks and keep them in the refrigerator. It takes time to get used to (a) going to the kitchen and (b) putting on cold deodorant. But it is totally worth it!

Or, if you prefer, you can use empty, clean containers or small Ball jars. Keep it solid in the refrigerator and use a popsicle stick to scrape some out or keep it in the bathroom in the melted form and just mix it a little before taking some out. And, be careful, because it leaves white marks on clothing so it is best to put it on after you get dressed.

Makes about 4 ounces

6 tablespoons melted coconut oil
6 tablespoons arrowroot powder
2 tablespoons baking soda *
Essential oils (e.g., lavender, sandalwood)

Whisk together the coconut oil, arrowroot powder and baking soda until smooth. Add a few drops of essential oil at a time, until it smells good. Pour into container of choice and use at will!

*Baking soda is irritating for some people. You can decrease it to 1 tablespoon and add more arrowroot or go all arrowroot.

  1. I started making my own earlier this year–similar recipe and added lavender. At room temp, I apply with index finger and let dry a bit before putting on my outfit top for the day. I find I need even less than I thought (at least no one has shifted away from me on hot days). Bye bye Tom’s 🙂
